Birds in Spain

I kept my eyes open for birds while we were exploring Spain, and found many I had never seen before, and some old friends in new places. I don’t have any pictures from one fine birding afternoon at the Urdaibai Nature Reserve, due to camera operator error; but I have others from that area, as well as from the Royal Botanic Gardens in Madrid, city parks in Bilbao, and along the rivers on our visits to Pontevedra and Porto, Portugal.

These really are stunning. I love the egret poses especially. And so glad the kingfishers came out.

I’ve been waiting for this one! So many I’ve never seen. Those kingfishers are spectacular! I watched a whole NatGeo special on the kingfishers and I’ve loved them ever since. Lucky you to see them! It’s funny to see “common” in some descriptions as they are new to me. My other favorites are the long-tailed tit and the black redstart. Would love to see your life list someday.

I was going to prep and post other travel topic photos first, but I couldn’t wait to do the birds either! We found the kingfishers by spotting one of my favorite species: Big-Lens Birders. We had little common vocabulary, but we swapped English/Spanish names, and of course recognized our mutual passion for these beauties.

I don’t keep a life list, but I’ve been thinking of going back through the past 4 years of photos and building one retroactively. Sounds like a winter project….

      Thanks, Bonnie Rae!
